Village at Winona Blue Laws

What’s a blue law, you ask? Blue laws are state or local regulations that prohibit or restrict certain behaviors for religious purposes. Winona Lake was famous for some of its blue laws:

  • No manufacture, sale, consumption, or possession of alcohol.
  • No swearing or spitting in public.
  • No boating, carriage rides, or swimming on Sundays.
  • No dancing with members of the opposite sex.
  • No conducting of business (except food service) on Sundays.
  • No card playing or wagering of any kind.

Note: Village at Winona Blue Laws ballplayers are not required to uphold these historic regulations, but this type is in fine print for a reason. We got you to think about it.

The Village at Winona Blue Laws began as a vintage base ball club in 2003. Our club was greatly assisted in its formation by the Elkhart Bonneyville Millers and the Hobart Deep River Grinders, both of which we consider our "parent clubs." In turn, we have actively participated in helping to "plant" new clubs. Indiana clubs in which we played some role in helping to get started are the Warsaw Fleetfoots, the Huntington Champion Hill Toppers, the Indianapolis Hoosiers, and the Marmont Saints.

Our goal as a club is to see vintage base ball in all it's colorful variations continue to flourish on the American landscape. As a means toward achieving this goal, the Blue Laws have initiated two new annual events, the Northern Indiana Vintage Base Ball All-Star Match, and the Huzzah Hoosier Pennant. Please visit the Blue Laws home page or call Naughy Waltz for more information.
