The Chagrin Valley is home to Greater Cleveland’s only vintage ball club with roots in the Civil War. The “first” Forest City base ball club, sponsored by the Cleveland Forest City Base ball Club, was started in 1865 and was comprised of amateur players. By 1868 the Club had grown to 150 members and the team enjoyed a strong local reputation. In 1869 the Forest City team suffered a lopsided, humiliating defeat from a Philadelphia professional team and decided to employ a few professionals on its team. Professional baseball in Cleveland began June 2,1869 when the Cleveland Forest Citys met the Red Stockings from Cincinnati. Cleveland was represented in baseball’s first professional league in 1871, but the Club disbanded in 1872. The current edition of the Forest Citys began in 1994 and is enjoying its thirteenth season. They are modeled after the 1865 club and use the rules codified in 1860. It is sponsored by the Chagrin Falls Historical Society and Atlas Steel Products. They enjoy playing base ball the way it was meant to be played! ContactMark Cammock |
